FAMILY HISTORY
In an age which technology is developed faster
than ever before, many people are being attracted to the idea of looking back
into the past. One way they can make this is by investigating their own family
history. They can try to find out more about what their families came from and
what they did. This is now a fast-growing hobby, especially in countries with a

in technology over the last forty years. For
instance the (51)_______ of mobile phones and e-mail communication are
common these days. However, machines
that translate from one language to (52)______ are still in their early
stages. It seems to me that a machine could never do as good a job as a human,

window”. You need a human (58)_____ to interpret the situation. Similarly with (59)_______ language, it is
difficult for a machine to know how to translate accurately because we rarely translate every

Question III. Read the passage and choose the
best answers to questions below. Write the
answers on your answer sheet. (10 pts)
Tulips are Old World, rather than New World,
plants, with the origins of the species lying in Central Asia. They became an
integral part of the gardens of the Ottoman Empire from the sixteenth century
onward, and, soon after, part of European life as well. Holland, in particular,
became famous for its cultivation of the flower.
A tenuous line marked the advance of the tulip
to the New World, where it was unknown in the wild. The first Dutch colonies in
North America had been established in New Netherlands by the Dutch West India
Company in 1624, and one individual who settled in New Amsterdam (today's
Manhattan section of New York City) in 1642 described the flowers that bravely
colonized the settlers' gardens. They were the same flowers seen in Dutch
still-life paintings of the time: crown imperials, roses, carnations, and of course
tulips. They flourished in Pennsylvania too, where in 1698 William Penn
received a report of John Tateham's "Great and Stately Palace”, its garden
full of tulips.
By 1760, Boston newspapers were advertising 50
different kinds of mixed tulip "roots”. But the length of the journey
between Europe and North America created many difficulties. Thomas Hancock, an
English settler, wrote thanking his plant supplier for a gift of some tulip
bulbs from England, but his letter the following year grumbled that they were
all dead.
Tulips arrived in Holland, Michigan, with a
later wave of early nineteenth-century Dutch immigrants who quickly colonized
the plains of Michigan. Together with many other Dutch settlements, such as the
one at Pella, Iowa, they established a regular demand for European plants. The
demand was bravely met by a new kind of tulip entrepreneur, the traveling
salesperson. One Dutchman, Hendrick Van Der Schoot, spent six months in 1849
traveling through the United States taking orders for tulip bulbs. While tulip
bulbs were traveling from Europe to the United States to satisfy the nostalgic
longings of homesick English and Dutch settlers, North American plants were
traveling in the opposite direction. In England, the
4
enthusiasm for American plants was one reason
why tulips dropped out of fashion in the gardens of the rich and famous.
Question 71: Which of the following questions

North American plants.

They were the same flowers seen in Dutch
still-life paintings of the time: crown imperials, roses, carnations, and of
course tulips.
Thomas Hancock, an
English settler, wrote thanking his plant supplier for a gift of some tulip bulbs
from England, but his letter the following year grumbled that they were all
dead.
Tulips arrived in Holland, Michigan, with a
later wave of early nineteenth-century Dutch immigrants who quickly colonized
the plains of Michigan. Together with many other Dutch settlements, such as the
one at Pella, Iowa, they established a regular demand for European
10
plants. The demand was bravely met by a new
kind of tulip entrepreneur, the traveling salesperson. One Dutchman, Hendrick
Van Der Schoot, spent six months in 1849 traveling through the United States
taking orders for tulip bulbs. While tulip bulbs were traveling from Europe to
the United States to satisfy the nostalgic longings of homesick English and
Dutch settlers, North American plants were traveling in the opposite direction.
In England, the enthusiasm for American plants was one reason why tulips
dropped out of fashion in the gardens of the rich and famous.

QuestionIV. The passage below contains 5
mistakes ( from 46 to 50 ). Recognise the mistakes and write their correct forms in your answer
sheet. (5 pts)
FAMILY HISTORY
In an age which technology is developed faster
than ever before, many people are being attracted to the idea of looking back
into the past. One way they can make this is by investigating their own family
history. They can try to find out more about what their families came from and
what they did. This is now a fast-growing hobby, especially in countries with a
fairly short history, like Australia and the United States.
It is one thing to spend some time going
through a book on family history and to take the decision to investigate your
own family’s past. It is quite another to carry out the research work
successfully. It is easy to set about it in a disorganizing way and cause
yourself many problems that could have avoided with a little forward
planning.
If your own family stories say you that you
are connected with a famous character, whether hero or criminal, don’t let this
idea take over your research. Just treat it as an interesting possibility. A
simple system for collecting and storing your information will be adequate to
start with; a more complex one may only get in your way. The most important
thing, though, is to get starting. Who knows what you might find?
Example: line 1: which -> when
46. Line 1: developed → developing
47. Line 2: make → do
15
48. Line 3: what → where
49. Line 8: disorganizing → disorganized
50. Line 9: could have avoided → could have
been avoided
SECTION D: READING COMPREHENSION (30 pts)
Question I. Read the passage carefully and
choose the best option to complete each blank.(10 points)
It is true that there have been great advances
in technology over the last forty years. For
instance the (51) use of mobile phones and e-mail communication are
common these days. However, machines
that translate from one language to (52) another are still in their early stages. It seems to me that a machine could
never do as good a job as a human, especially when it comes to interpreting what people are (53)
saying. Of course, machines can translate statements such as “Where is the bank?” but even simple
statements are not always straightforward because the meaning (54) depends on more than just
words. For example the word “bank” has a number
of (55) different meanings in English. (56) How does a translating
machine know which meaning to take? In
order to understand what people are saying, you need to take into (57) account
the relationship between the speakers
and their situation. A machine cannot tell the difference between the English expression “Look out!”
meaning “Be careful!” and “Look out!” meaning
“Put your head out of the window”. You need a human (58) being to
interpret the situation. Similarly with
(59) written language, it is difficult for a machine to know how to
translate accurately because we rarely
translate every word. On the contrary, we try to take into consideration how the idea would be (60)
expressed in the other language. This is hard to do because every language has its own way of
