After invented dynamite, Swedish-born Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered like the inventor of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Origin there were five awards literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace. Economics was added in 1968, just sixty-seven years after the first awards ceremony. Nobel’s original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is used for the awards whom vary from $30,000 to $125,000. Every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, the awards are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics make an important role in the judges’ decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but relatively little literature prizes. No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

Two decades ago, researcher Irene Pepperberg started working with Alex, an African grey parrot, and ever since then, she has been building (51) __________ data on him. Pepperberg, whose recently published book The Alex Studies makes fascinating reading, claims Alex doesn’t copy speech but intentionally uses words to get (52) __________ it is that he wants.

Early on, he (55) __________ vocalize whether two things were the same or different. Now, he carries out more complex tasks. Presented (56) __________ different-coloured balls and blocks and asked the number of red blocks, he’ll answer correctly. He requests things as well. (57) __________ he ask to sit on your shoulder and you put him (58) __________ else, he’ll complain: ‘Wanna go shoulder.’
A few experts remain skeptical, seeing very (59) __________ in Alex’s performance beyond learning by association, by means of intensive training. Yet Alex appears to have mastered simple two-way communication. As parrots live for 60 years or more, Alex may surprise (60) __________ all further.
Question II. Choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D) to complete each of the gaps in the passage below. Write A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet. (10 points)
POLAR BEARS
Polar bears are in danger of dying out. Unlike some other endangered animals, it’s not hunters that are the problems, it’s climate change. Since 1979, the ice cap at the Arctic Circle where the polar bears live has reduced in size by about 30 per cent. The temperature in the Arctic has slowly been (61) __________ and this is (62) __________ the sea ice to melt, endangering the polar bears’ home. The polar bears’ mean (63) __________ of food are the different types of seal found in the Arctic. They catch them by waiting next to the air holes the seals have (64) __________ in the ice. (65) __________ the bears are very strong swimmers, they could never catch seals in the water. This means that the bears (66) __________ do rely on the ice to hunt. Polar bears also need sea ice to travel. They can (67) __________ the huge territory and often swim from one part of the ice to another. They have been (68) __________ to swim up to 100km, but when there is less ice, they may have to swim further and this can (69) __________ fatal to the bears. A number of bears have drowned in the last few years and scientists believe that it is because they were not able to (70) __________ more sea ice before they became too tired and couldn’t swim any further.

Question III. Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D) for each question. Write A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet. (10 points)
An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled – a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.
Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature’s output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities.
However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.
71. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The economic impact of air pollution
B. What constitutes an air pollutant
C. How much harm air pollutants can cause
D. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere
72. The word adversely in the passage is closest in meaning to __________.
A. negatively B. quickly C. admittedly D. considerably

A. water vapour is an air pollutant in localized areas
B. most air pollutants today can be seen or smelled
C. the definition of air pollution will continue to change
D. a substance becomes an air pollutant only in cities
74. The word these in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A. the various chemical reactions
B. the pollutants from the developing Earth
C. the compounds moved to the water or soil
D. the components in biogeochemical cycles
75. For which of the following reasons can natural pollutants play an important role in controlling air pollution?
A. They function as part of a purification process.
B. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants.
C. They are less harmful to living beings than other pollutants.
D. They have existed since the Earth developed.
76. According to the passage, human-generated air pollution in localized regions __________.
A. can be dwarfed by nature’s output of pollutants
B. can overwhelm the natural system that removes pollutants
C. will damage areas outside of the localized regions
D. will react harmfully with natural pollutants
77. The word localized in the passage is closest in meaning to __________.
A. specified B. circled C. surrounded D. enriched
78. According to the passage, the numerical value of the concentration level of a substance is only useful if __________.
A. the other substances in the area are known B. it is in a localized area
C. the natural level is also known D. it can be calculated quickly
79. The word detectable in the passage is closest in meaning to __________.
A. beneficial B. special C. measurable D. separable
80. Which of the following is best supported by the passage?
A. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly review their air pollution laws.
B. One of the most important steps in preserving natural lands is to better enforce air pollution laws.
C. Scientists should be consulted in order to establish uniform limits for all air pollutants.
