Interviewer: <\/span><\/b>Thank you for coming into our studio today, Peter, to tell us about your\nresearch into an ancient species of tree called the gingko. First of all, how\ndid you develop an interest in it?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter:<\/span><\/b> I think\nthat anyone who\u2019s seriously interested in plants inevitably comes across the gingko tree pretty early in their training,\nbecause very unusually, it\u2019s a single plant species with no known living\nrelatives; what particularly fascinated me was the fact that it\u2019s been\nessentially unchanged for more than two hundred million years. Other people are\nattracted by its distinctive leaf \u2013 once you see it, you don\u2019t forget it.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Interviewer:<\/span><\/b> When was the gingko first cultivated?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter: <\/span><\/b>Our best estimate is about one thousand years ago in China, which is\nsomewhat late. There\u2019s a lot of Chinese literature from before that time, and\nit doesn\u2019t mention the gingko, while it does mention a lot of other plants. The\nevidence points to the fact that the gingko was probably always a rather rare\ntree, until it first attracted the attention of people about a thousand years\nago, when they realised it could be cultivated as a source of nuts.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>

Interviewer<\/span><\/b>:<\/span> <\/span>And does the gingko tree have medical uses?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter:<\/span><\/b> The plant itself has long been valued for its healing properties. The\nmedicinal uses in the East and the West have gone in different directions, using\ntwo different parts of the plant: mainly the seeds in the East, and mainly the\nleaves in the West. In the West, work has been done on the leaves to see\nwhether they contain substances that might help improve people\u2019s memories. The\nresults, however, have shown no strong evidence for such powers.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Interviewer: <\/span><\/b>What else do humans use the gingko tree for?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter: <\/span><\/b>Well, it\u2019s a very popular tree in city streets all over the world. It\u2019s\nincredibly tough, so can tolerate conditions that might kill other types of\ntree. It\u2019s hard to know exactly why, but the leaves are particularly\nunattractive to insects that harm other trees. And it seems to survive in a\nstreet setting: its roots aren\u2019t getting much oxygen, they\u2019re getting a lot of\nsalt and goodness knows what else is getting poured on them, but it seems\nrelatively resistant to that.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>

Interviewer: <\/span><\/b>You\u2019re\ninterested in the benefits of street trees in general, aren\u2019t you, Peter?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter:<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b>That\u2019s right,\nI am. They\u2019re important for a number of reasons. One advantage is that trees\nalong a street make it feel narrower and cause drivers to go more slowly. And\nobviously they provide shade, making people feel a lot more comfortable; they\ndon\u2019t mind being outside if they can be in the shade. And so trees help bring\nall the benefits that come from that: kids playing outside, neighbours keeping\nan eye on each other\u2019s houses, people encouraged to linger in a shopping area\nthat they would otherwise walk right through.<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Interviewer:<\/span><\/b> Do you think there are lessons we can learn from the gingko about\npreserving other plant species?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter: <\/span><\/b>Well, because humans have distributed gingko around the planet, they\nhave helped ensure the species\u2019 long-term survival. There are probably a couple\nof wild original populations of gingko tree still <\/span><\/p>\n

left in China, but even those\nmay have been aided by people. Obviously, we should try to preserve animals and\nplants in their native habitats, but in the same way that we\u2019ve used other\nmethods for conserving large mammals, I think conservation through widespread\ncultivation is essential for preserving plant diversity for the future.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Interviewer:<\/span><\/b> And finally, does working on such an ancient tree species affect your\nview of the world?<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Peter:<\/span><\/b> Yes, as humans, one of our biggest shortcomings is that we can\u2019t see\nthe long term. So reflecting on a plant like gingko that was around in very\ndifferent ecosystems hundreds of millions of years ago, really makes our own\nspecies seem very young.<\/span><\/p>\n
