In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the popular\ntheory among Earth scientists was that a number of major catastrophes had taken\nplace over a relatively short period of time to give Earth its shape. French\ngeologist Baron Georges Cuvier introduced this idea, which was later coined the\n<\/span>\u201c<\/span>catastrophe theory.” Proponents of the\ncatastrophe theory used fossilized <\/span>creatures and the faunal changes in rock strata\nto support their beliefs that major events such as volcanoes had occurred on a\nworldwide scale. The catastrophe theory was used to support the notion that\nEarth’s history was not a relatively long one. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

B <\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

In response to the catastrophe theory, a handful of Earth\nscientists searched for explanations that would provide a better scientific\nbasis for Earth’s geology. James Hutton, the father of geology, is best known\nfor his gradualist theory, a paradigm that became known as\n“uniformitarianism.” Hutton published Theory of the Earth in 1795,\nafter which many other geologists including Charles Lyell, adopted the idea\nthat small changes on Earth occurred over a large expanse of time.\nUniformitarians rejected the idea that cataclysmic events could shape the Earth\nso quickly, and instead proposed the theory that the key to the present is the\npast. The term deep time was used to describe the span in which gradual\ngeological processes occurred, <\/span>\u00b7<\/span>especially the formation of sedimentary rock.\nCharles Darwin later based his work on the idea, by developing his theory of\nevolution. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

The majority of paleontologists<\/span> <\/span>and geologists adopted\nthe gradualist theory of Earth’s history for more than 100 years. In 1980, a\ndiscovery in Italy gave scien\u00adtists a reason to reconsider the discarded\ntheories of catastrophism. Geologist Walter Alvarez discovered a clay layer in\nthe K-T boundary that intrigued him. The K-T boundary refers to the layer of\nEarth between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. The geologist with the help\nof his father Luis Alvarez, a promi\u00adnent physicist, analyzed the clay for heavy\nmetals. After careful examination, the clay was found to contain high levels of\niridium. Samples taken from the K-T boundary in other parts of the world were\nexamined, with the same findings. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

D<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

The Alvarez group wrote a historic paper that applied the\ncatastrophe theory to their discovery. According to their hypothesis, the\niridium in the K-T boundary was caused by an asteroid or a comet that hit Earth\nnear the end of the Cretaceous period, over 65 million years ago. They also\nproposed that the impact would have raised enough dust to block the sun and\ncool Earth, which in turn would have prevented photosynthesis. This chain\nreaction would have led to the extinction of plants and animals. The main\nreason that the Alvarez theory took hold so quickly in both the world of\nscience and the public realm, was that it could account for the extinction of\nthe dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. The acceptance of this\ntheory was widespread, even before the discovery in 1990 of a 180-kilometer <\/span>crater in\nMexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, a potential piece of evidence of the asteroid\nimpact. <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Events that have occurred on Earth in the last 100 years or more\nhave proved to geologists that not all processes are gradual. For one, trust could serve as a\nsignal of goodwill, either to secure initial co-operation or to ensure the success\nof a long-term relationship. On the other hand, the origins of trust might be\nsimpler: some people might just feel good about trusting others.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

F     <\/span><\/b>If the\namount transmitted was $15, for example, this was doubled by the researchers,\nand the second player then sent any part he wished of the new amount back to\nthe first player. Here, the trusting outcome is for the first player to send\nall $15 to the second. As\nearly as 1883, CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) construction crews blasting\nthrough the rugged terrain of northern Ontario discovered copper and nickel\ndeposits in the vicinity of Sudbury.[2]<\/b>\nAs refining processes, uses, and markets for the metal developed, Sudbury became\nthe world\u2019s largest nickel producer. The building of the Temiskaming and\nNorthern Ontario Railway led to the discovery of rich silver deposits around\nCobalt north of Lake Nipissing in 1903 and touched off<\/u><\/b> a mining\nboom that spread northward to Kirkland Lake and the Porcupine district. [3] <\/b>Although the economic importance of\nthese mining operations was enduring, they did not capture the public\nimagination to the same extent as the Klondike gold rush of the late 1890s. [4]<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/p>

Fortune-seekers\nfrom all parts of the world flocked to the Klondike and Yukon River valleys to\npan for gold starting in 1896. At the height of the gold rush in 1898, the\npreviously unsettled subarctic frontier had a population of about 30,000, more\nthan half of which was concentrated in the newly established town of Dawson. In\nthe same year, the federal government created the Yukon Territory, administered\nby an appointed commissioner, in an effort to ward off the prospect of\nannexation to Alaska. Even if the economic significance of the Klondike strike\nwas somewhat exaggerated and short-lived, the tales of sudden riches, heroic\nand tragic exploits, and the rowdiness and lawlessness of the mining frontier\nwere immortalized through popular fiction and folklore, notably the poetic\nverses of Robert W. Service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps\nless romantic than the mining booms, the exploitation of forest and water\nresources was just as vital to national development. The Douglas fir, spruce,\nand cedar stands of British Columbia along with the white pine forests of Ontario\nsatisfied construction demands on the treeless prairies as well as in the\ngrowing cities and towns of central Canada and the United States. British\nColumbia\u2019s forests also supplied lumber to Asia. In addition, the softwood\nforest wealth of the Cordilleras and the Shield was a valuable source of\npulpwood for the development of the pulp and paper industry, which made Canada\none of the world\u2019s leading exporters of newsprint. Furthermore, the fast\nflowing rivers of the Shield and Cordilleras could readily be harnessed as\nsources of hydroelectric power, replacing coal in the booming factories of\ncentral Canada as well as in the evolving mining and pulp and paper industries.\nThe age of electricity under public ownership and control was ushered in by the\ncreation of the Ontario Hydro-Electric Power Commission (now Ontario Hydro) in\n1906 to distribute and eventually to produce this vital source of energy. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Western\nsettlement and the opening of the northern resource frontier stimulated\nindustrial expansion, particularly in central Canada. As the National Policy\nhad intended, a growing agricultural population in the West increased the\ndemand for eastern manufactured goods, thereby giving rise to agricultural\nimplements works, iron and steel foundries, machine shops, railway yards,\ntextile mills, boot and shoe factories, and numerous smaller manufacturing\nenterprises that supplied consumer goods. By keeping out lower-priced foreign\nmanufactured goods, the high tariff policies of the federal government received\nmuch credit for protecting existing industries and encouraging the creation of\nnew enterprises<\/i><\/b>. To climb the tariff wall, large American industrial\nfirms opened branches in Canada, and the governments of Ontario and Quebec\naggressively urged them on by\noffering bonuses, subsidies, and guarantees to locate new plants within their\nborders. Canadian industrial enterprises became increasingly attractive to\nforeign investors, especially from the United states and Great Britain. Much of\nthe over $600 million of American capital that flowed into Canada from 1900 to\n1913 was earmarked for mining and the pulp and paper industry, while British\ninvestors contributed near $1.8 billion, mostly in railway building, business\ndevelopment, and the construction of urban infrastructure. As a result, the\ngross value of Canadian manufactured products quadrupled from 1891 to 1916. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

We get about ten thousand calls a\nyear, many from people worried that if they have bats in their loft they can\u2019t\nhave any building work done. They need the right advice, because the law\nprotects bats. We\u2019re contracted by an organisation called Natural England to\narrange a service whereby anybody with bats on their property can have a specialist\nvolunteer come out and give information and advice about the creatures they\u2019re\nliving with. Generally, once they have the information, they\u2019re happy. It\u2019s the\nsign of a really green environment if they have bats. In the summer, we get\ncalls when bats have flown uninvited into people\u2019s houses after dark. We advise\nturning the lights out, shutting the door, leaving the window open and allowing\nthe bat to find its own way out. One of the most common myths we have to\nexplode is that bats always turn left when they leave roofs. Apparently that\nwas printed in a magazine recently, so we got a clutch of calls about it. We\nalso get people calling and humming the entire Batman<\/i> theme tune down the phone. The jokes are pretty predictable,\nI\u2019m afraid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having worked\nin nurse training for a while, I found I missed the patient contact I\u2019d enjoyed\ndoing nursing itself. When I saw this job, I thought of it as a way of getting\nsome of that contact back \u2013 without the cleaning up! I remember the dread of\nwhat the calls might be about on my first day, but they give you so much\ntraining before you\u2019re let loose that you can handle it. It was a bit difficult\nnot having the physical clues I\u2019d have been able to pick up on th\u01b0 wards. But\nyou very quickly get used to working with the computer, it makes you feel safe.\nOccasionally, there are problems with the system but you\u2019re never left with a\nblank screen, and because we\u2019re a national service there\u2019s always somebody else\nwho can take a call. The most common calls are about coughs and colds, things\npeople can mannage on their own, but I need to look out for anything that will\nindicate that they might need to go and see a doctor. Yesterday, I\ngot lots of calls relating to weekly programmes, though there was quite a\ncontrast; the radio show for the blind, \u2018In Touch\u2019, and \u2018Watchdog\u2019 on TV. The \u2018In\nTouch\u2019 callers had heard of some new equipment and wanted further\ndetails.\u2019Watchdog\u2019 is a consumer programme and people generally call me because\nthey have a problem with a product from the company we\u2019ve covered on the show.\nWe have regular callers, some very nice and some not so nice, and you get to\nknow them. Quite often people phone to complain spontaneously, and when we call\nthem again within ten days with a response, which we promise to do in some\ncases, they\u2019ve forgotten what made them cross. Television programmes probably\ngenerate more calls, particularly medical programmes or programmes about\nchildren. People have a sense that we\u2019re a general repository of knowledge and\nwisdom \u2013 which we\u2019re not! There\u2019ll have been a show that has covered most\nthings at one time or another so I can always look things up. We can\u2019t always\ngo into details of all the settings of different brands of machine, though. We\nalso get a lot of calls about skincare from people who want to know about\nspecific ingredients in our products. You also get fascinating insight into the\ncountry\u2019s lifestyles. For instance, we tend to get lots of calls about cleaning\nproducts on a Monday, presumably because people buy them over the weekend,\nthen, towards Friday we\u2019ll get haircare and beauty because they\u2019re planning a\nnight out. I also long for one-off problems I can really get my teeth into \u2013\nthe ones that come out of blue. We once had a call from a woman who\u2019d seen a\nwedding dress on one of our TV adverts and wanted one identical to it for her\nown big day. We found that it was still at the television studio and was\navailable to borrow \u2013 which she did. It just goes to show that it\u2019s always\nworth asking!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>
